It is a well known phenomenon that population is ageing all over the world.In its 2019 revision of UNO ,it is stated that in 2050 there will be about 16% people of 65years or above. In 2018,in first time in history people over 65 years outnumbered children under 5 years of age.People of 80 years and above will be tripled to 426 million in 2050 from 143 million in 2019.The cut off age for recognition as senior citizen in India is 60years & it is estimated that there will be about 20%of population of 60years plus in 2050. Magnitude & dimensions of problems related to the cause of elderly has been understood globally & also by policy makers in India , that has been reflected by the way of keeping some constitutional provisions pertaining to senior citizens that has come in to force on 26.01.1950. The first world assembly was convened in 1982 in Vienna & produced 62 point "Vienna International action plan on ageing ". On 14th November 1990 UN General assembly adopted a resolution (45/106) to establish 1st October as "International day for older persons" .In 1991 UN General Assembly adopted 18 points "United nations principles for older persons".The year 1999 has been observed as International year for Older Persons. 2nd World assembly on ageing has been convened on 2002 in Madrid.We see there has been persistence of different programmes pertaing to elderly over Globe & India as well ,but programme is negligible compared to magnitude & dimensions of elderly issues . From the end of Government of India,we see there has been some steps regarding health care of elderly ; Geriatric Medicine has been recognized as separate medical speciality by Medical Council of India . Non government organizations has started to form ; Geriatric Society of Delhi has been installed in seventies, which has been transformed to & registered as "Geriatric Society of India " on 19.03.1979 . This Geriatric Society of India is the first professional body dedicated to the cause of elderly & has been dispersing the knowledge of Geriatrics to medical fraternity & others working for the cause of elderly & also common people at large ; Dr. O.P.Sharma , National Professor Geriatrics & General secretary of GSI has joined GSI in 1982 & since then he has been carrying the baton for running the buisness of the society .Through the hard work & extreme devotion of Dr.O.P.Sharma (and family members),Geriatric Society of India has gained its present height. Geriatric Society of India has members from all over India & also from eastern zone of India . In eastern region through relentless effort of Dr. Kaushik Ranjan Das with support from some members GSI, Geriatric Society of India West Bengal Branch has been installed on 29.08.2013 ,Which has been undertaking outstanding activities in West Bengal in different areas of Geriatric Care .It has been felt that persistence of activity toward dispersing the knowledge of Geriatrics to Medicos & related personnel is lagging far behind in other parts of Eastern India & change in the scenerio should be made & members of GSI in eastern region should take step . Looking at this Eastern Zonal coordinator of GSI Dr. Kaushik Ranjan Das has started communicating with existing GSI members in different states of the region ; every contacted have responded to the call & supported the endeavor of installation of a Eastern Zonal branch of GSI--as result "Geriatric Society of India Eastern Zonal Branch " has been installed on 29.03.2019 in a meeting at HHI in Kolkata with the objective of awakening & organizing Medicos in the region and motivate them toward Geriatric care for which a preparedness is seriously warranted to combat devastating effect on the life of senior citizens due to increase in number & life span of them.This website is the official platform of GSI Eastern Zonal branch. It will contain news of activities of GSI HQ, GSI Eastern Zonal branch & other branches and geriatric organizations.Achive will be rich in articles pertaining to geriatrics ,provisions & laws related to senior citizens; could be use as an ready reckoner for viewers (Medicos ,paramedics & people interested in elder's care).
